Resources: Identify as a military or veteran applicant

Some post-secondary institutions across Canada include a military and veteran status question on their general application form. In order for post-secondary institutions to directly reach out to military and veteran students, they will need to know who they are first. If the post-secondary institution that you are applying to has the option to declare your military or veteran status, it is encouraged to do so.

Why identify?

The goal of identifying military and veteran students is to establish an understanding of demographics and current programs attended by military and veteran students on your campus.

How to collect information:

  • Add a self-report option on a dedicated website page.
  • Gather the information from your institution’s general application form. This option may lead to more accurate information as all new students are required to complete the application form.
  • Include a follow-up question to obtain student consent to share their contact information, if you plan to reach out regarding specific services and programs for military- or Veteran-connected students.
  • Avoid using an overly general question when trying to identify military and Veteran students. Instead, break down the question:
    • Are you currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces?
    • If yes, what element are you serving in – Regular Forces or Reserve Force?
  • Are you a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran?
