Supporting students who are deployed during the academic term
An important consideration for active military members or reservists is the potential to be deployed during their university studies. It is important for post-secondary institutions to be aware of this possibility and to have considered potential options to support students.
- Consider developing a formal policy to support students who may be deployed.
- If no formal policy is available, develop a Student Deployment Checklist to help guide military students.
Student Deployment Checklist (Sample)
- Notify Faculty of deployment and confirm legitimacy of deployment
- Connect with instructor(s) to explore academic options:
- If early in the term, delete course and re-register in future term?
- Withdraw from the course?
- Deferral of examination?
- Extension of course(s) end date?
- If no academic options are feasible:
- Incomplete?
- Explore timelines for an incomplete 3-6 months?
- Determine if student de-registration required
- Connect with Registrar’s Office to facilitate fee reimbursement
- Explore future course registration options where de-registration is required:
- Availability of course in upcoming term/year?
- Can a class seat be held?
